What is the key for channelising the economy and manpower of any nation? In a developing country like India, an inclusive growth is a necessity for attaining the desired rate of economic and human development. Various companies are contributing to this greatly by fostering a scientific temperament.
By imbibing a scientific bent of mind, one learns the art of questioning unfounded beliefs, while applying knowledge to real-world circumstances. Most importantly, one never stops learning new things. Today, many students develop an interest to pursue a career in the field of engineering at a young age. This enables them to develop a scientific bent of mind before they begin studying engineering.
So, once they begin their studies in engineering, here are some ways that can help them develop their scientific pursuits further:
* Utilise academic projects: As an engineering student, you may come across many academic projects. The main motive of these projects is to sharpen your practical skills by providing valuable opportunities to put theoretical knowledge into actual practice. So, it is important to accept such projects and make the best out of them. Don't try and copy another's project idea. The practical experience gained will help you in becoming a better engineer.
* Practical experience: The world is all about achievers going out of their way to attain the impossible. To hone valuable practical skills is to go beyond the ordinary and think out of the box. Take part in technical training programmes and workshops to develop practical skills. Go to engineering camps and Olympiads. These experiences help you work in a team, be a problem solver, develop creative thinking and find the fun in engineering.
* Build a strong base: To construct a strong building, it is important to work upon the foundations. A strong foundation can only emerge from one's proficiency in basics. So, it is important to brush up on all the basics of engineering concepts. Doing so can enable you to boost your confidence when you start a job.
* Improve your non-technical skills: Engineering may come with an appearance of being entrenched in technicality, but it requires its share of non-technical skills. Unfortunately, while some of our engineering brethren are technically proficient, their soft skills may not be up to the mark. You can improve upon your general knowledge by preparing for aptitude, reasoning tests and brushing up on news.
Go out and converse with others to hone your communications skills. Ask questions, seek out answers, compare options and make decisions. Participate in interdisciplinary activities and keep your perspective fresh and well-oiled for work.
* Value mistakes: It is an open truth - no one has ever achieved greatness without making mistakes. They are an important part of the learning process, one of many steps towards mastery. Change your perspective towards mistakes and learn from them. Remember, it is only practice that brings the beauty out of hard work. Giving up shouldn't be a part of your dictionary and make perseverance your new ally. Take guidance to solve difficulties and soldier on, through the storm.
While the above steps may seem like a didactic discourse that most budding engineers come across, it holds true. Knowledge is certainly power of the greatest level and it takes the methodical and curious mind to unleash the greater potential.
