Building work has begun on the new National Stadium in Japan that will provide an "iconic stage” for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and Paralympics. The main construction work on the stadium began on December 1, 2016, about 14 months later than planned, after the original design plans by the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid were discarded following a public outcry over bloated cost estimates.

The 149 billion yen (1.1 billion pounds sterling) structure is expected to be completed in three-and-a-half years’ time to host the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. Architect Kengo Kuma designed the building as an oval structure with a huge oculus above the track. Seating stands will be sheltered below the latticed arch and steel canopy, and circulation areas around the edge of each level will feature different plants and trees, in harmony with the surrounding park.
